After the death of Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, three individuals temporarily assume responsibility for administering the country. These are:
-
The President
-
The Head of the Judiciary
-
One member of the Guardian Council
This arrangement remains in place until a new Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran is selected. According to Article 107 of Iran’s Constitution, the Assembly of Experts (Majles-e Khobregan-e Rahbari) is responsible for electing the new Supreme Leader.
However, when the Supreme Leader passes away, resigns, or becomes unable to perform his duties due to illness, a temporary council is formed until a new leader is chosen.
According to Article 111 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran:
Formation of a Temporary Council
Until a new Supreme Leader is elected by the Assembly of Experts, a temporary council is formed to manage state affairs. It consists of:
-
The President
-
The Head of the Judiciary
-
One of the Islamic jurists (faqihs) of the Guardian Council
Powers of the Temporary Council
The temporary leadership council assumes all the duties and powers of the Supreme Leader.
However, for certain sensitive decisions (such as holding a referendum or amending the Constitution), it must obtain the approval of three-quarters of the members of the Expediency Discernment Council (Majma’-e Tashkhis-e Maslahat-e Nezam).
Duration of the Temporary Council
The council operates temporarily until the Assembly of Experts appoints a new Supreme Leader.
According to the Iranian Constitution, the Temporary Council would consist of:
-
Masoud Pezeshkian – President of Iran
-
Ali Larijani – Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council
-
Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei – Head of the Judiciary of Iran
