Iran has reportedly intensified pressure on Iraq to expel Iranian Kurdish opposition groups based in the Kurdistan Region, with General Ismail Qaani allegedly urging Baghdad to remove them entirely and hand over some of their leaders. Tehran is also said to consider the 2023 Iraq-Iran security agreement ineffective and is pushing for a new deal.
According to a report by Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, Iran rejects limiting the groups to areas away from border regions and has reportedly warned of possible military action against their camps if demands are not met. Sources in Baghdad and Erbil say Tehran wants a similar approach to the expulsion of members of the Mujahideen-e Khalq from Iraq in 2012.
A Kurdish political source also claimed Qaani’s recent visit to Baghdad included direct demands to fully remove Iranian Kurdish opposition factions from Iraqi territory, though handing over opposition figures to Iran is viewed as unlikely due to political and international considerations.
