According to a report by the Iraqi Kurdistan Team of the CPT organization, during the three months following the outbreak of war between the United States, Israel, and Iran on February 28, 2026, the Kurdistan Region of Iraq faced a sustained wave of attacks by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its affiliated armed groups in Iraq.
The CPT Iraqi Kurdistan Team documented 751 attacks during this three-month period, resulting in 22 deaths and 112 injuries.
Overview of Attacks During the Three-Month Conflict (February 28 – May 28)
Total attacks: 751 attacks (647 occurred during the first 40 days, before the April 8 ceasefire).
Perpetrators: Iran-backed groups in Iraq were responsible for 60.3% of the attacks, while Iranian forces carried out 39.7%.
Type of attacks: 78.4% were conducted using suicide drones.
Geographic distribution: The governorate of Erbil was the primary target, accounting for 78.3% of all attacks.
Targets:
37.4% targeted U.S. diplomatic and military facilities in the Kurdistan Region.
31.7% targeted civilian areas, companies, Peshmerga Ministry bases, and military facilities not involved in the conflict.
30.9% targeted camps and bases of Kurdish opposition parties from Iranian Kurdistan.
Changes During the Ceasefire Period (April 8 – May 28)
Despite the ceasefire announced on April 8, attacks on the Kurdistan Region continued. CPT recorded 104 attacks during the ceasefire period.
Key changes included:
Target shift: 82.7% of ceasefire-period attacks targeted Iranian Kurdish opposition parties and their camps.
Perpetrator shift: Iranian forces became the primary attackers, responsible for nearly 89% of attacks during the ceasefire.
Casualties: All casualties during the ceasefire period (5 killed and 17 wounded) were members of Iranian Kurdish opposition parties.
Recommendations
To all parties: Reach a binding agreement to completely halt attacks on the territory of the Kurdistan Region.
To the Iraqi government: Protect Iraq’s sovereignty and hold Iran and its affiliated groups accountable.
To the Kurdistan Regional Government and Iraqi government: Provide prompt compensation to affected civilians under Iraqi compensation laws.
