🔻 According to data and statistics from the Kurdistan Region Judicial Council for the year 2025:

  • In 2025, a total of 61,328 marriages were registered. The highest marriage rate was recorded in Sulaymaniyah Province.

  • Across the Kurdistan Region, 15,826 divorce cases were registered. The highest divorce rate was recorded in Erbil Province.

  • A total of 107 cases of permission for second marriage (polygamy) were registered. The highest number of second marriage permissions was recorded in Erbil Province.

  • In Erbil Province, the main causes of divorce were identified as follows:

    • Incompatibility was the leading cause, with 1,232 cases (15%).

    • Mobile phones and technology were the second leading cause, with 1,066 cases (15%).

    • Infidelity and moral misconduct ranked third, with 918 cases (13%).

On 22/2/2026, the Kurdistan Region Judicial Council published its recorded data and judicial statistics for the period 1/1/2025 – 31/12/2025, covering the provinces of the Kurdistan Region and the Garmian Administration.

Marriage Statistics

Across the Kurdistan Region, 61,328 marriage contracts were registered. The highest rate was in Sulaymaniyah Province, as shown in Chart No. (1):

  1. Erbil Province: 19,620 marriages (32%)

  2. Sulaymaniyah Province: 25,687 marriages (42%)

  3. Duhok Province: 12,955 marriages (21%)

  4. Garmian Administration: 3,066 marriages (5%)

Divorce Statistics

Across the Kurdistan Region, 15,826 divorce cases were registered. The highest rate was recorded in Erbil Province, as shown in Chart No. (2):

  1. Erbil Province: 3,878 cases (31%)

  2. Sulaymaniyah Province: 5,745 cases (46%)

  3. Duhok Province: 2,033 cases (16%)

  4. Garmian Administration: 728 cases (6%)

Permission for Second Marriage

Across the Kurdistan Region, 107 cases of court-approved second marriage were registered, as shown in Chart No. (3):

  1. Erbil Province: 42 cases (39%)

  2. Sulaymaniyah Province: 39 cases (36%)

  3. Duhok Province: 26 cases (24%) (Note: The original figure appears to contain a typographical error listing 283; percentages indicate approximately 26 cases.)

  4. Garmian Administration: No cases registered.

Causes of Divorce in Erbil Province

According to the Judicial Council data, the main causes of divorce in Erbil Province were:

  • Incompatibility: 1,232 cases (15%)

  • Mobile phones and technology-related issues: 1,066 cases (15%)

  • Infidelity and moral misconduct: 918 cases (13%)
